Spatial Computing

Computers can think in 3d.  Humans can also think in 3d.  Unfortunately, only a few computers can express that 3d information in ways that are meaningful to the human body.  The problem is the 2d computer screen.  We 3d human beings are left looking at 2d photographs of 3d information, instead of being able to experience 3d content directly.

This project, Spatial Computing is a video series that proposes a solution to this problem.  By leveraging a number of existing technologies, this series explains how we will one day be able to manipulate digital 3d content in a natural and intuitive way.

I began tackling this project with two audiences in mind – technologists and lay people.

For the technologists, I hope to spur innovation.  By sharing a unified vision, complete with a clear, cogent set of 3d UI conventions, the work clarifies one possible outcome of all this hard work.

For the lay people, I want to excite and prepare them for what is to come.  All these incredible innovations and technologies will be on our doorsteps in the not-too-distant future.  By providing vivid imagery, I hope this work clarifies consumer needs and pushes that horizon line a tad bit closer.

In any case, regardless of your familiarity with 3d computer technology, hopefully you’ll like the videos.  If you like what you see, remember to drop me a comment below!

In this first video I explain the basic ideas behind the concept and how it compares to how we currently compute.

In part II, I share a particular use case, shopping. This video features gestures, model manipulations, and a clear example of how this technology could be helpful in our daily lives.YouTube Preview Image

How is this different from virtual reality? Or is it just a newer term for it?

Found this site after seeing your creative business card. I hope I see this sort of technology in my lifetime!!

Thanks for this future preview. And that biz card is genius. Does the tech exist to take this to fruition? If so, make it happen.
